The Ghent Playhouse kicks off its 50th Anniversary season with Paul Slade Smith’s razor-sharp political satire, “The Outsider,” directed by Sky Vogel. A wildly funny sneak peak behind the scenes of American politics, “The Outsider” is also clever, insightful and inspirational. “The timeliness of this show major is a reason the Ghent Playhouse chose it to lead off their 50th anniversary season,” Director Sky Vogel said. “It’s a wonderfully topical story about the political process in this country. It’s very warmhearted, not at all partisan, and funny on every page.
In the midst of a political scandal, Lieutenant Governor, Ned Nooley, suddenly finds himself thrust into the position of Governor. A pure policy wonk, Ned is the furthest thing from a politician. In fact, he is exactly what the public is looking for: the worst candidate to ever run for public office… or is he?
“I came to directing first as an actor—and that experience provides a certain perspective,” Vogel explained. “I welcome collaboration and feedback from the cast. It makes for a stronger show, not to mention a positive atmosphere all around. I work is by partnering with the actors, not merely imposing my thoughts.”
The Ghent Playhouse is an award-winning, non-profit, volunteer-run community theater. The historic building is equipped with comfortable seating, modern accessible restrooms and air conditioning, in addition to a set shop, dressing rooms, kitchenette, costume storage and sophisticated lighting and sound systems. Drawing talent from all around the Hudson Valley and beyond, the playhouse now presents diverse productions each year.
