Next Fest: The Next Festival of Emerging Artists In concert following their weeklong PS21 residency, with World Premieres.
GRAMMY-nominee Seth Parker Woods, “a cellist of power and grace” (The Guardian), joins the Next Festival of Emerging Artists for a program of breathtaking scope that features three world premieres commissioned by the Festival and two other exciting works of 21st-century music, all rehearsed on the PS21 campus during their weeklong residency. .
Founder and Artistic Director Peter Askim leads the orchestra of outstanding early-career string players in the premiere performances of Essay #1: Leave the People, a searing exaltation of Black American Music by four-time GRAMMY nominee Curtis Stewart, and new works by Askim and GRAMMY-winning trumpeter and composer Michael R. Dudley. Herencia, a deeply personal ode to hybrid cultural identities by composer-cellist Andrea Casarrubios, and the East Coast premiere of Rebecca Saunders’ wildly unpredictable Ire, Concerto for cello, strings, and percussion, with Woods as soloist, round out the program.
All proceeds from the concert benefit the Crellin Park Summer Camp fund for scholarship attendees.
