Susan Eley Fine Art presents abstract paintings by Ted Dixon. This installation expands upon Dixon’s sustained inquiry into his unwavering commitment to the possibilities and power of abstraction. “Eighteen” features his reading of “The 1619 Project,” developed by Nikole Hannah-Jones, reframing the country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and contributions of Black Americans as central to our national narrative. “Eighteen” attempts to visually impress while encouraging consideration of a past and present that effect all of us. “As I am not an historian or writer, my aim is not to interpret the book or history. My goal was to create paintings that reflect my feeling and enlightenment upon reading the book.” As a Black abstract painter, Dixon is particularly interested in what enables or stimulates our human expressions. How do we learn to see what we cannot yet see? What are the things that influence our ability to perceive? His paintings can be described as abstract compositions influenced by personal experiences and efforts to capture moments in time that have a certain feeling and meaning. Through this process, he attempts to visually express his thoughts and ideas while remaining true to his hopes, aspirations, values, failures and deceptions.
