Women in New York State won the right to vote in 1917 after many years of advocating, organizing, petitioning, and marching. Not only was success in New York key to passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920 at the Federal level, but New York women were leaders in the national push for women’s rights. Learn about the fight for women’s rights in New York, and the times that suffragists marched (literally) into Columbia County.

Lecturer: Ashley Hopkins-Benton is a Senior Historian and Curator of Social History at the New York State Museum in Albany, NY. Her research and collections focuses include women’s history, LGBTQ+ history, immigration, sculpture, and toys. She was co-curator/author of Votes for Women: Celebrating New York’s Suffrage Centennial (2017) and Enterprising Waters: The History and Art of New York’s Erie Canal (2020), and author of Breathing Life Into Stone: The Sculpture of Henry DiSpirito (2013). Prior to her work in Albany, Hopkins-Benton served as Educator at CCHS, where she loved helping kids (of all ages) connect with history and art. She holds an MA in History Museum Studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program, and a BA in Art Studio/Art Education from SUNY Potsdam.
